Let groundcover do seventy percent of the work
Walk through Dream Park (Drömparken) in Enköping or study the perennial matrices developed at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Alnarp, and you notice immediately how little bare soil is visible. Instead of isolated clumps surrounded by woodchip mulch, plants are woven in a three-tier ratio:
- 70% Ground Matrix: Low, long-lived foliage plants that knit together to suppress weeds and trace the crisp edge of paths (such as Geranium macrorrhizum, Epimedium×rubrum, or Sesleria autumnalis).
- 20% Structural Anchors: Clipped shrubs, ferns, or architectural clumps placed at path corners and sightline pivots (Matteuccia struthiopteris, Pinus mugo 'Mops', or Ribes alpinum).
- 10% Ephemeral Veils & Bulbs: Tall, airy stems that rise through the carpet in summer without blocking the view completamente (Succisa pratensis, Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna', or Allium sphaerocephalon).
